evaluation

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

1) Our media product challenged and also conformed to some racial stereotypes. Our main antagonist is a Chinese man which is very uncommon because from the extensive research we carried out in the production and making of our product we realised that most main antagonist in films nowadays are white middle aged men and our teenage Asian robber challenges this stereotype. However having said that we also do conform to some stereotypes by making the the victim in the opening scene who is the corner shop man south Asian because. This made the scene in a south west London borough look more genuine. The exchange of dialogue in the scene is very different to any clinched scene from real media because its very unique as in its not loud and aggressive as many robbery scenes in films are its very calm yet intimidating.

How does your media product represent certain social groups?

2) Our media product represents many social groups in many different ways. One of the main things audiences will notice from the first opening two minutes is that our main antagonist who commits the robbery in the opening scene is not black and we have done this on purpose to challenge the stereotype in cinema and society itself. Rather than go with a young black teenager in south London which would be the obvious choice for a antagonist in the setting we shot the scene in we went with a teenage Asian boy who expressed the dialogue very different to maybe a black teenage boy may have. However the ethnic differences made very little impact on the brilliance of the performance.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

3) We chose miramax because there known for distributing movies with a similar genre to ours. We didn't have the budget to get one of the main big six companies like Disney etc because our media production wasn't that big of a budget movie therefore miramax was the most suitable. They will get our movies into cinema however we wont solely reply of box office views because we are going to distribute our media product on DVD to make more sales and also on Netflix and love films to make the movie available on demand or audiences worldwide.

4) Who would be your audience for your media product?

Our media product will be age 15 and above because of some strong language and some adult themes such as crime and horror. The age range however is mostly teenagers to young adults because this movie is themed on very suburban London themes which young teens and adults can relate to. This is mostly targeted to young men because very strong masculine themes which may not interest women in general but this doesn't mean women cant enjoy it as well. The targeted audiences social background is mostly working class people who see things like robbery and are used to the streets of suburban London and can relate to the movie. As far as ethnicity goes this is not a factor in our film because its for every type of ethnicity and every religion.

5) How did you attract/address your audience?

Our primary research really helped us know what the potential audience wanted to see in our product. For example We asked the question "what weapon do you find most intimidating?" and the results we got were gun therefore we changed the weapon our antagonist was carrying from a knife that was the original weapon to a gun to suit the audience. We mended and tweaked many little things in our product to suit the audience. We also got some inspiration from our secondary data because I watched many opening scenes of similar genre movies of our movie and came across the movie saving private Ryan and I noticed there was little to no background music yet this had a titanic affect and made it much more interesting. Therefore we tried our best to have little background music and dialogue because we really didn't need them.

6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product.

I have learned many skills during filing and editing for example we used a SLR camera and was tricky to figure out with all the different buttons considering I had never used one I picked it up relatively quickly and used it well to get match on action shots and panning shots as you can see in the final product. I also learned to use final cut pro x editing software which was difficult at the start but got easier I learned how to cut shots and make them flow seamlessly I learned how to slide and swap shots to suit my preference.

7) Looking back at your preliminary task, What do you feel you have learned in the progression from in to the final product?

I think the main thing I have learned and also my group is time management because we could not all meet up at the same location to shoot before during our preliminary task however as we got to our final task we all were very organised and keen to get the task at hand done in good time which is one of the reasons I believe that my media product turned out so well. Also I have used many different variety of camera angles and shots in my final product compared to my preliminary task because I have learned how to do more shots along the way.
